Homemade Taco Seasoning

Homemade Taco Seasoning

Typically, I am unable to definitively answer questions requiring absolute answers, like “Who is your favorite band?”

I always need to qualify my answer – You mean, of all time? Geez, that’s a hard one. Of a certain genre?  I can’t really narrow that down, either.

“What about your favorite color?”

Depends.  Do you mean for clothes, furniture, wall paint?

“Ok, well how about your favorite movie?”

Same.

But the one absolute I am comfortable with answering is the question, “What is your favorite type of cuisine?”

It’s the type of cuisine I could eat every day if I had to.  And that is…drum roll please…

Mexican food.  I love it.  It is by far my favorite.  I devour a burrito bowl from Chipolte at least once (sometimes twice) a week.  I love chips and salsa (homemade restaurant-style salsa recipe coming soon!), tacos, margaritas – anything with Mexican spices or ingredients.  You name it (Mexican), I love it.

One of the easiest Mexican meals to whip up at home is tacos.

Ahem, Taco Tuesday, anyone?

It is so easy to just buy a pound of ground meat, your classic taco fixings and that packet of taco seasoning.

But you know what else is easy?  Making your own taco seasoning from the stuff I bet you already have in your pantry.  Plus, there wont be any preservatives and – not that those seasoning packets cost an arm and a leg – but it’s cheaper to make your own taco seasoning, too.

Quick history lesson: Cinco de Mayo, a day observed to commemorate the unlikely victory of the Mexican army over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 (according to Wikipedia) and a holiday Americans inexplicably celebrate by pounding margaritas and Coronas, is right around the corner.  So, in the spirit of the holiday, below is my own quick and easy (and cheap!) taco seasoning recipe.
